Oklahoma Rep. John Becker wants to ban contraception, but literally doesn’t know how it works.

Women's Health

This is just a personal view. I’m not a medical doctor.”

Republican State Representative John Becker is trying to have the intrauterine device (IUD) banned because he claimed it causes abortion by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting.

Besides the fact that a large portion of fertilized eggs may fail to implant in the uterus regardless of contraception, the IUD does not function this way. Becker is absolutely wrong. An IUD prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

This is a scientific claim that he is presenting as fact. When challenged to defend this claim, he responded with the above statement, “This is just a personal view. I’m not a medical doctor.”

No, this is not a personal view, but yes, you are not a doctor. You are highly irresponsible for making ignorant statements that make it impossible to have an intelligent discussion about contraception and other laws that affect women’s healthcare.

Hmmm … as well as Mr. Becker not being a doctor he must also not be a thinker of any sort. A simple Google search would have provided the simple answer on how an IUD works. Perhaps his male ego was insulted by the fact the IUD makes it hostile to sperm … who knows with these “non-science” guys. BUT one thing for sure is that they shouldn’t be speculating on things they know nothing about.

I’m definitely going to be following your blog! 🙂
