Politician and scientists can work together: “I’m not a scientist either but I can use my brain and I can talk to one.”

Climate Change

In response to Republican Governor Rick Scott’s refusal to acknowledge or deny climate change, in July of 2014 Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist said, “I’m not a scientist either but I can use my brain and I can talk to one.

This is the kind of response we hope to hear from politicians regarding scientific issues. Science and politics inevitably collide over a variety of issues, which means people from both sides must listen to each other.

Crist said this before meeting with Professor Jeff Chanton of the Florida State University Earth and Atmospheric Science Department.

During his time as governor, Crist hosted in 2008 a Climate Change Summit, and signed three executive orders designed to reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency, and develop renewable energy sources.

After leaving office, the Republican supermajority in the legislature undid most of these initiatives.

Yes, there is still room for debate regarding the effects climate change and appropriate countermeasures, but intelligent debate can only occur if the two sides listen and talk to each other.

The conflict arises because to be in a job politicians need to be popular.
Scientists need funding and what is easily popularised will be funded best. Hence space- science (most of which is a huge waste of money) is a favourite. Scientists love to probe and play and be well paid. Particle colliders don’t come cheap.
