Duck Dynasty star claims only gays get sexually transmitted diseases

AIDS, Sexual Orientation

ashole

Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson went on record inaccurately stating:

“Do you think it’s a coincidence that all of these debilitating — and literally that can cause death — diseases follow that kind of conduct? God says, ‘One woman, one man,’ and everyone says, ‘Oh, that’s old hat, that’s that old Bible stuff.’”

He followed this up with more unscientific claims, stating that heterosexuals are ““not going to get chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and syphilis, and AIDS.

This is absolutely wrong. As I previously pointed out, there are more straight people now with HIV/AIDS than any other sexual orientation.

Each year in the U.S., there are about 2.86 million Chlamydia cases, 870,000 gonorrhea cases, and 55,400 syphilis cases. The diseases do not care about the host’s sexual orientation.

A large proportion of cases go unreported. We should not be encouraging medical ignorance and social stigmas with unscientific vitriol. This compels people to avoid testing for sexually transmitted diseases, which causes symptoms to go untreated, and allows them to be spread to more partners.

Reading the bible does not make you an expert on sexually transmitted diseases, and neither does being on a reality television show.
